2011-2012



October 4, 2011 Lecture:>

The first meeting of the Guelph Historical Society's new season will take place on October 4th, 2011 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at 7.30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Ceska Brennan. Her topic: "Symbolism and Design in the Cemetery – Then and Now". Ceska is the Cemetery Counselor and Memorialist at Woodlawn Memorial Park. She was one of the organizers and tour guides of the popular Spirit Walks, a 10 year on-site theatre / history project held in Woodlawn, and she is the creator of the events held in the cemetery throughout the year. Ceska is a writer, artist, celebrant and officiant.

Membership Renewal

Membership renewal information and a list of lectures and speakers for the 2010-2011 year will be mailed to members during Fall 2011.

Non-members are welcome at all lectures and may join the Society before or after each lecture. For more details about membership click this link: Membership.

Non-members who do not intend to join the Society are requested to donate $5 for each lecture attended.

Topic: "The Missing Link in Presbyterian Guelph: The United Presbyterian Church, 1846-1883"
Guest speaker: Donna Speers
Location: Knox Presbyterian Church

Now long forgotten, the United Presbyterian Church once flanked St. Bartholomew's Church at the corner of Dublin and Cambridge Streets. Founded by disaffected members of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, the congregation was led by Rev. Torrance. Donna Speers will share her research on the congregation that worshipped at the church before it was closed, demolished and became one of Guelph's lost buildings. - poster

Annual General Meeting - Tues, Apr 5, 2011, 7:00pm

The Annual General Meeting is at Knox Presbyterian Church (note the changed location)at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday April 9, 2011. Following the business meeting our speaker Donna Speers, will speak about "The Missing Link in Presbyterian Guelph: The United Presbyterian Church, 1846-1883".

Following the business meeting our speaker Elysia De Laurentis from the Wellington County Museum will speak about "Change and Continuity in Local Architecture: The Wellington County Museum and Archives' Gordon Couling Collection".

Annual General Meeting - Tues, Apr 7, 2009, 7:00pm

The Annual General Meeting is at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at the corner of Norfolk and Sufflolk Streets at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday April 9, 2009. Following the business meeting our speaker Flora Macdonald Spencer, author of Evan Macdonald, A Painter's Life, edited by Judith Nasby, Wilfrid Laurier Press, 2008 will speak about "Guelph's Lost Buildings and the Paintings of Evan Macdonald".


Historical Conference to Fund Environmental Disaster Relief
Fri-Sat, June 13-14, 2008

The Ontario Historical Society's 120th anniversary conference "From Nature to Ecology, Landscape to Ecosystems: A Historical View of Ontario Environments". The conference is being held at the University of Guelph.

The event features a Gala evening on Friday, June 13,2008 in War Memorial Hall. Proceeds from the Gala will go to Canadian Save the Children's Myanmar/Burma disaster relief fund.

Bus Trip to Royal Ontario Museum - Tues, May 6, 2008

Special trip to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto on Tues, May 6, 2008. Bus leaves from Harcourt Memorial United Church at 8:30am, and returns at 5:15pm. - poster


Zehrs tapes

The Guelph Historical Society collects Zehrs tapes to help with the ongoing expenses of maintaining the office and the archives. Please bring your tapes to the monthly meetings and drop them in the box on the membership table.
